Beach Hazards Statement issued June 10 at 10:21AM EDT until June 10 at 11:00PM EDT by NWS Grand Rapids MI * WHAT...High wave action, strong currents, and dangerous swimming conditions expected. Piers may be heavily swamped by waves. * WHERE...Ottawa, Allegan and Van Buren counties. * WHEN...Through this evening. * IMPACTS...Strong currents can pull swimmers into deeper water and high waves can sweep people off piers. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Northerly winds of 15 to 25 mph will create hazardous waves of 4 to 6 feet through this evening. The north side of north piers are particularly dangerous places to swim today. This includes North Beach at South Haven and Holland State Park. Remain out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming conditions and do not venture out on piers. Please check with your local authorities on potential beach closures. Structural currents form along piers where longshore currents and wave action flow into the structure. Structural Currents can sweep you out into deeper water along the pier structure. A longshore current is a lake current that moves parallel to shore. Longshore currents can be strong enough to Prevent swimmers from being able to keep their feet on the bottom...making it difficult to return to shore.
