Special Weather Statement issued May 23 at 2:46PM EDT by NWS Caribou ME At 245 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along a line extending from near Newport to near Thorndike to 6 miles north of Liberty. Movement was southeast at 35 mph. HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 50 mph and half inch hail. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible. Locations impacted include... Bangor, Ellsworth, Bucksport, Newport, Blue Hill, Brewer, Hampden, Hermon, Dedham, Castine, Verona Island, Penobscot Township, Orrington, Holden, Levant, Carmel, Orland, Newburgh, Surry, and Plymouth. This includes the following highways... Interstate 95 between mile markers 162 and 184. US Highway 1 near Orland. State Highway 9 between Dixmont and Bangor. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with these storms and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with these storms. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 700 PM EDT for southeastern and east central Maine.
